Overview
Imphal has always been the seat of royal power of the Kingdom of Manipur (mentioned in early historical texts as “Kangleipak”) before the British came to India, through the entire length of the imperial rule, and finally with the signing of the Instrument of Accession in 1947, Manipur became a part of the Indian subcontinent. In 1956, it was declared as a Union Territory and stayed so until 1972, when it was awarded the status of being a full-fledged Indian State. Imphal, being the capital city of Manipur reflects the unique blend of different cultures of the coexisting Meitei people of the mainland and the Naga and the Kuki tribes in the hilly regions. The biggest attraction of the place is the majestic palace situated in the heart of the city beside the serene Loktak Lake. While planning your northeast vacation, do include an Imphal tour that encompasses the city’s multidimensional delights that include both Imphal sightseeing as well as the historical monuments and memorials.
